Investigating heterogeneity in meta-analysis of studies with rare events

چکیده
Abstract In many meta-analyses, the variable of interest is frequently a count outcome reported in an intervention and control group. Single- or double-zero studies are often observed this type data. Given setting, well-known Cochran’s Q statistic for testing homogeneity becomes undefined. paper, we propose two statistics risk ratio, particularly application case rare events meta-analysis. The first one chi-square statistic. It constructed based on information conditional probability number treatment group given total events. second likelihood ratio statistic, derived from logistic regression models allowing fixed random effects ratio. Both proposed well defined even situation single-zero studies. simulation study, tests show performance better than traditional test terms I error power under common event situations. However, as newly still unsatisfactory very suggest bootstrap approach that does not rely asymptotic distributional theory it shown performs error. Furthermore, empirical meta-analyses used to illustrate methods.

Investigating heterogeneity in studies of resting energy expenditure in persons with HIV/AIDS: a meta-analysis.
BACKGROUND There is conflict in the literature about the extent of alterations of resting energy expenditure (REE) in persons with HIV. OBJECTIVE The study was conducted to ascertain the mean difference in REE (in kJ) per kilogram of fat-free mass (FFM; REE/FFM) between HIV-positive subjects and control subjects and to investigate heterogeneity in the literature. DESIGN A meta-analysis comp...
متن کاملMeta‐analysis of two studies in the presence of heterogeneity with applications in rare diseases
Random-effects meta-analyses are used to combine evidence of treatment effects from multiple studies. Since treatment effects may vary across trials due to differences in study characteristics, heterogeneity in treatment effects between studies must be accounted for to achieve valid inference. The standard model for random-effects meta-analysis assumes approximately normal effect estimates and ...
متن کاملMeta-analysis for rare events.
Meta-analysis provides a useful framework for combining information across related studies and has been widely utilized to combine data from clinical studies in order to evaluate treatment efficacy. More recently, meta-analysis has also been used to assess drug safety. However, because adverse events are typically rare, standard methods may not work well in this setting. Most popular methods us...
